For many sound designers, engineers and audio professionals, rendering a truly dynamic and spatially coherent mix for VR presents a new challenge in audio production with a steep learning curve. Which techniques, workflows and formats should be employed to create truly engaging and interactive 3D sound? Organised by Future Phonic Studios in collaboration with Abbey Road Institute Amsterdam and hosted at Wisseloord Studios & Abbey Road Institute Amsterdam, this hands-on 2-day workshop will cover the latest developments and tools of spatial audio you need to know.
Day 1. 13:00-17:00 Wisseloord Studios (Catharina van Renneslaan 10, 1217 CX Hilversum)

During day 1, hosted at the legendary Wisseloord Studios, you’ll be given a primer on 3D audio principles covering the most common formats and technologies, allowing you to finally understand concepts like Ambisonics, Binaural, HRTFs, channel-based audio and object-based audio.
Day 2. 10:00-18:00 Abbey Road Institute Amsterdam (Atlantisplein 1, 1093 NE Amsterdam)

On day 2 you’ll be introduced to practical workflows for creating, mixing and rendering 3D sound in the prestigious classroom of Abbey Road Institute Amsterdam, which combines a professional mixing stage with an educational auditorium where you’ll be equipped with a professional audio workstation outfitted with Pro Tools, the latest 3D audio software tools and a few demo sessions to get you started. By the end of the day, you will be able to take home your very own 3D audio production.
To round things off, the event will feature a discussion on recording and implementing ambisonic vs. object-based & channel-based audio; how to create an engaging sonic experience in VR; and the potential of VR in translating music.
The course will be led by the founder of Future Phonic Studios – Richard Burki, the educational manager of Abbey Road Institute Amsterdam – Robin Reumers, the Head of Audio Products at Abbey Road Studios - Mirek Stiles, the author of “Modern Recording Techniques” and 4X Grammy-nominated producer & musician for surround sound – David Miles Huber, and Tom Pearce - head of operations at FLIP Entertainment, who has toured and recorded with major artists such as Elton John, Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck back in the 80s and 90s.
